Käthe-Kollwitz College of Vocational Education (KKBKHA) has over 2,100 full-time and part-time students and around 100 teachers. It provides courses for basic vocational training, further training, vocational training and academic studies in the following areas:
Hospitality and Catering
Baking and Confectionary
Childcare and Social Work,
Social Studies and Education
The college serves a local population of just over 187,000 people.
Once a year, trainees in the department of Hospitality and Catering have the opportunity to take an external, nationally recognised certification examination in the languages French and English (KMK-Zertifikatsprüfung). Since the 1980s study trips have been organised for students in the Hospitality and Catering department to Normandy, Paris and Champagne. From 2000 onwards, trainees in the Hospitality and Catering department have participated in cookery and service competitions with the Chambre de Commerce et d'Industrie, Fécamp (France), Canterbury College (UK) and the Oslo Kokk og Stuart Skola (Norway). In addition, cooking and food service competitions have taken place with trainees from the Lycée Paul Bert in Fécamp (France) and the Hotel School in Almelo (the Netherlands).
In Summer 2015 twelve students from the childcare department spent four weeks in a British nursery school in Leeds in cooperation with Leeds City College. Five students from the Hospitality and Catering department spent two weeks in Greece in September 2015 working at the Alexander the Great Beach Hotel owned by the P. A. P. Corporation. In May 2016 five more trainees will complete a work placement there accompanied by representatives of the local branch of the German Hotel and Restaurant Association that also supported the ELOCASS project.
